I don’t really love the term “Sunday School” because I don’t think that teaching the bible like it’s a subject in school is really what Jesus is about. But I digress. It’s a term that Americans are pretty familiar with so let’s go with it.
Sunday School is a mission field. Yes, you heard me right. Sunday school is a mission field. Just like Africa and the inner city, Sunday School is a mission field.
It is a mission field of broken children who need us to bring them to Jesus.
But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” Mt. 19:14
I know kids whose parents smoke pot, watch porn in front of them, leave them alone for hours, neglect and abuse them. They go without proper nutrition and education and certainly don’t get the emotional support they crave. These kids don’t know the name Jesus and they have never heard of God.
Let’s keep it real, even the kids coming to church with their parents aren’t always getting an Eph 6:4 upbringing.
Most homes these days aren’t training their kids in the ways of the Lord because they don’t know the ways of the Lord.
So what do we do?
This generation needs the Sunday School teachers of the world to rise up and do their thing. Grab your flannel graph, your finger puppets and repertoire of songs with hand motions and let’s teach these kids who Jehovah God really is.
Who do you teach?
Look next door. Look around your church’s neighborhood. You’ll find them. This mission field is extensive. There are kids everywhere. And before you say, “No parent is going to let you take their kid” let me tell you a story. My husband and I drove 25 kids to 5 nights of VBS by simply pulling into apartment complexes and saying “WHO WANTS TO GO TO VBS?” And my husband was dressed like Julius Caesar.
So once you get these kids what do you do?
Love them. Teach them. Feed them. Tell them:
God made the world.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Gen. 1:1
The theory of evolution has poisoned the minds of our children. They no longer know there is a God who created all that they see, feel and taste. They don’t know that the world around them isn’t a cosmic accident.
God loves them.
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
The theory of evolution has poisoned the hearts of our children. They no longer know that there is a God who created them for a holy purpose and calling. They don’t know that they are not a cosmic accident.
Jesus is the best.
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
Jesus is the best friend. Jesus is the best at fixing hurts. Jesus is the best at mending hearts. Jesus is the best to make you brave and strong and happy. Jesus is the best.
So the next time someone asks you, “Would you like to teach next quarter?” Think about. The mission field is calling.
