Why My Kids Don’t Play With Tablets In Church

0506_does_your_child_need_a_tablet_768x432_con_main

My kids have them. Actually five of my kids all got some sort of device this year for Christmas.  I am not anti-tablet, ipad or kindle or whatever else is out there.

But the truth is that I struggle with the whole technology thing. I swear sometimes I see their brains getting sucked out of their little heads.

I want my kids to be somewhat current. I want them to have some freedom of choice. But I don’t want zombie children. Kids, and adults too,  get sucked into the screen and walk around like the living dead. They miss life. They miss the real life joy all around them.

So I made a stand, one place that my kids will never, ever be screen zombies is with the church. This is why.

Jesus wants children.

He specifically asked for them to come to him. I don’t want a screen to blind my kid from seeing Jesus when he is standing right in front of them.

Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Luke 18:16

Kids are impressionable.

Some people might think that an adult service is over a kid’s head but I believe kids absorb the love and the worship and when their bodies catch up it spills out of them. They get it.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Dt. 6:4-6

I believe God wants families to worship together.

There is something deeply spiritual about a man bringing his family before the Lord. Stand together, as a family, at the feet of the Almighty and worship him. Worship him with whatever you’ve got. Worship him with song. Worship him with praise. Worship him with prayer. Worship with your children and you will grow worshiping children.

All Judah was standing before the LORD, with their infants, their wives and their children. 2 Chron. 20:13

Praise the Lord from the earth,

you creatures of the ocean depths,

fire and hail, snow and clouds,

wind and weather that obey him,

mountains and all hills,

   fruit trees and all cedars,

wild animals and all livestock,

   small scurrying animals and birds,

kings of the earth and all people,

rulers and judges of the earth,

young men and young women,

   old men and children.

Let them all praise the name of the Lord.

For his name is very great.

Psalm 148:7-12

I agree. Do you think it’s also probably wise to not allow things you’ll have to un-train later?
