Why Legalizing Gay Marriage Doesn’t Hurt Christianity

Same-Sex-Marriage-Supreme-Court

Today I know many of American Christians wanted to freak out about our Supreme Court’s decision to legalize gay marriage. Some of you probably did. Rather than freak out, rather than curse our country and die, rather than throw in the towel, I want to encourage you with a few things.

Faith can’t be legislated.

From who you have sex with to smoking pot, any behavior that is dictated by man-made laws isn’t what it is about. Jesus asks for a life of purposeful, intended sacrifice not one that is legislated.

Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law. Gal. 2:16

Governments don’t save.

Americans tend to have a weird hybrid of patriotism and religion that isn’t biblical.

Government and civil authorities are earth-bound in their focus and in the perimeter of their reach. We must not give earth-bound kingdoms the weight of the eternal one.

Romans 13:1-7

One Kingdom saves.

There is one kingdom, not of this world, that saves.

For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins. Col. 1:13-14

Christianity cannot be stopped.

Did you know that the church of Jesus is spreading the fastest in China, a country where it is illegal to be a Christian? Governments, laws and Supreme Courts cannot impede the message of Jesus.

Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe. Heb. 12:28

Prepare the hospital.

Soon the world will be vomiting up the consequences of their carnality. When they are broken and hurt and suffering please don’t meet them with judgement and “I-told-you-so”s. Instead start stocking your spiritual triage. Fill your heart with bandages of love and bring them to the Doctor.

Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:17

“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…” – Jesus

I was almost afraid to look at my Facebook feed today because I was expecting hateful rants devoid of Christ-like love. This was the first thing I saw on the subject. Thank you for the encouraging post! 🙂
