So the problem with Miley starts long before she decided shave her head, take off her clothes and grind a married man on stage. Her problem started before she became a child star, before her whims were indulged and before she decided she would sacrifice dignity for the spot light.
Her problem started when no one ever set a fear of God in her heart. The sacred word says:
Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth… Ecc. 12:1
I wonder if Miley knows anything about her Creator. I wonder if she knows he fashioned her for a divine purpose. I wonder if she knows that he sustains the universe with her on his heart. I wonder if she knows that her designer is the same one who formed the beauty of the mountains and the seas with just his word. And he created her for a life of beauty and a life of grace.
Her problem started when her father abdicated his role as the spiritual protector of his family. When he gave up his sword and shield for fame and riches.
“Don’t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes!” Nehemiah 4:14
Her problem started when her mother began to applaud sin rather that instill a passion for incorruptible beauty in her heart.
Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. 1 Peter 3: 3-5
Her problem started when her family forsook the ancient ways of the called out and worshiped celebrity status over the Most High.
Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Deut. 6:4-8
Her problem started when she listened to the father of lies tell her that her raunchy debauchery will profit her. She believed him when he told her that she is an object to be lusted after rather than a spirit being intended to extend mercy to others and glory to God. She swallowed the deadly poison.
For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44
Her problem will persist as along as we believers mock her and judge her rather than humbly lay her name at Jesus’ feet. Her destruction will be inevitable until a hero, or a band of heroes, of the cross take aim at the real enemy and pray for her deliverance from him.
Her problem will be our problem until we realize our daughters are not immune to giving away their purity, our sons are not resistant to lust and our families are not unassailable to the same threat.
The Miley Cyrus Dilemma is not really just about Miley. It’s about all of us.
