The Bible: Burden or Blessing?

Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law. Ps. 119:18

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

As I sit and quietly meditate (well OK not so quietly meditate with a toddler storming around the room) on these passages today I am simply struck by their truth. The commandments of God will require my sacrifice, yes. They will provide challenges always. They will stretch me beyond where I thought I could go. But they are wonderful.

Sometimes I wonder if I treat God’s commands more like a burden to drag through life. If I do, I have missed it all. Because the truth is, “Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law” (Gal. 5:1). It is for love that we obey. It is for love that our Father blesses us through our obedience.

It’s one of those things about God’s wisdom that is hard for us to comprehend. Obedience is a blessing? Surrender is freedom? Commands that give life? Yes!

Today, that’s my goal. To live less for checking off law requirements and to live more for the love of God who gives phenomenal blessings through his simply commands.

If you find yourself struggling with life, fighting to catch a breath, wondering if you will make it, ask the Lord to open your eyes to behold wonderful things from his law. Through his love, Christ is offering freedom. Go grab it with all you’ve got and don’t let go.

This is my “thing”. I go through periods when I can’t get enough of the scripture and am almost physically craving learning more from/about God. And then I go through times when it does seem like a task that needs to be done. Needed this reminder today…Thanks. 🙂

I love this, Serena. I spent about a month just reading Psalm 119 each day and meditating on it gave me such a new appreciation for the laws and commandments of God. The scriptures are so powerful. How much more so when we invite them to work in our hearts!
