And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. Mt. 8:14-15
This woman’s immediate response to your healing touch was to serve. Jesus, I want to serve you more. But how? I cannot cook you a meal or show hospitality like Peter’s mother-in-law did so how do I serve you?
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’
I see. When I serve the least of these, I am actually serving you, the Great I AM.
Help me to remember that because sometimes my work and my service seems like dutiful drudgery. I do laundry. I empty the garbage. I pack lunches. I wipe up the kitchen counter about 16 times a day.
I got to church. I teach bible class. I sign my name on the meal list when it gets passed around.
I get frustrated because my kids don’t pick up after themselves and neither does their dad. I feel like the monotony of being a mom suffocates me sometimes. I get bored doing the same old same old.
Help me to see the greater spiritual truth. I am serving you. I have been healed by your touch. Every time I serve my children, my husband, my church or my community I do it to you. They might be the immediate recipients, but you, my Savior and Redeemer, are one who is ultimately glorified.
