So if you live in hole similar to mine, you may not have heard about Donald Sterling either. Let me piece together what I’ve gathered.
- LA Clippers Owner
- Epic Scandal
- Racist Tapes
- Public Outrage
- Banned from NBA
Yes, the NBA banned this guy from breathing on anything sanctioned by the NBA for the rest of his life. Ok, he’s 80 so what? But none-the-less, he is banned for life because his mistress secretly recorded a private conversation revealing his bigotry.
On the tape Sterling berated her for “associating with black people” and bringing “them to my games.”
He went on to say, “I don’t want to change. If my girl can’t do what I want, I don’t want the girl. I’ll find a girl that will do what I want!”
In response, Rev. Al Sharpton ignited a firestorm. He called for the NBA to suspend Sterling immediately because no American company should be run with a bigot at the helm.
Um… Mr. Sharpton all you can nail this guy on is being a racist? Really?
He is married. He is publicly involved in a relationship with a girl 50 years younger. He treats his mistress like an inanimate object. He is an adulterer. And all you can come up with is bigot?
Al, this is a problem. You represent a much bigger problem for all of us. You mentioned nothing of his covenant breaking, his unfaithfulness, his objectification of women or his lack of sexual integrity.
His sins are deplorable. This scandal is epic. But for a whole different reason than you have led America to believe. Long before Sterling was called out for racism, he paraded his adultery around. He flaunted his sin. No outcry. No scandal. Just perfectly acceptable adultery.
He has unabashedly been mocking the covenant of marriage for a long time with no media reaction or impending boycotts. Three days of being a racist and he is the most hated man in America.
This is the real problem. The real problem is us.
My fellow citizens, and even my fellow Christians, don’t care about marriage. We don’t care about adultery. We don’t care that we spit on the covenants we make with God or each other. And God won’t permit it much longer.
Jeremiah the prophet said,
For the land is full of adultery,
and it lies under a curse.
The land itself is in mourning—
its wilderness pastures are dried up.
For they all do evil
and abuse what power they have. Jer. 23:10
Jesus the Messiah says,
“I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3
