Lord Make Me Humble

woman (1)

That’s not a prayer that I hear spoken or even whispered much. I’ll be the first to say, I don’t. Truthfully I’m scared to pray it. I am scared to ask the Lord to humble me. I would much rather him point out my missteps and let me fix them on my own. While that might be the best case scenario, I’m not sure if it is legit. I think sometimes I need the Lord to make me humble.

I need the Lord to make me humble when:

I blame my husband.

This happens about 100 times a day. Garbage overflows. His fault. Kids are late. His fault. I’m irritated. His fault. His fault. His fault. His fault.

Don’t point your finger at someone else and try to pass the blame! Hosea 4:4

Lose patience with my kids.

I am raising six rambling, loud, hearing impaired, homework hating, chore avoiding and never put my laundry away kids. Sometimes I forget just where I came from.

Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. Eph. 2:1

Expect Christians to be perfect.

I might not use the word perfect but that’s what I mean. I want other church members to be as dedicated, educated and as sophisticated as I am.

Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Phil. 1:1

Expect the lost to act found.

The lost are lost. I can’t expect them to act like they are found. I simply have to find them.

Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Won’t she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she will call in her friends and neighbors and say, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.- Jesus

Here it goes…

Dear Lord,

You are Lord. You are Lord of my husband. You are Lord of my children. You are Lord of your people. You are even Lord of the lost. I am not. Remind me of my place. Humble me.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

I recently uttered this prayer, and boy, did I get humbled. But I knew the humbling was from God, so it made me able to endure it.

Although I don’t think we are ever instructed in scripture not to ask God to humble us, I can’t find any examples of scripture instructing us to do so. I can’t even think of any descriptive examples of such (much less prescriptive). What I do find, in over a dozen places, is direct teaching that we are to humble ourselves.

I think a common, yet often unnoticed, sin in our world, is when people ask God to do things that he has asked them to do. I think there are many such examples: Asking God to bring justice to our nations, asking God to relieve the oppressed and poor. Asking God to uproot impunity and corruption in our governments and private sectors. I’m sure there are others. I assume that I do this as well — possibly unwittingly, and occasionally, wittingly.

I also feel that we should just be free to talk with God about what is on our hearts and minds. So, I’m not talking about a hard fast rule of some sort. I’m just concerned that we don’t miss God’s directions for our lives. He has clearly told us to humble ourselves. Maybe we also need to ask God to open our eyes to see the lack of humility in our own lives.

This conversation makes me think of Christ’s words in John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Honestly, I can’t do anything without God’s help. I simply can’t. I’ve tried, and it doesn’t work. I fail every time.

That is the best prayer. I will use it often. Thank you.
