Ok, so that’s not an exact quote. But he did say, “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?” (Luke 6:46) Jesus was obviously interested in his followers cutting the talk and just walking the walk.
I wonder if instead of just doing what he says if we have been deceived. Have we been duped into simply memorizing and studying his commands when he wants us to just do it?
Jesus book-ended his ministry with two potent commandments. I love this.
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Mt. 4:19
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Mt. 28:18-20
In three years that’s what it boiled down to for these early disciples. Jesus said, “Just do this.”
Come.
Follow me.
Go.
Make Disciples.
Baptize them.
Teach them.
The call seems pretty simple. I don’t think memorizing that is going to cut it. I’m not really sure how many bible studies we need to understand it. I’m not sure if reading it in Greek will make a difference. Just do it. Jesus says, “Just do it.” Remember what he said. Is he asking you:
“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?” (Luke 6:46)
