Jesus Loves Gay People Too!

Edited  from the original post on May 10, 2012

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

Our president supports gay marriage.  A growing number of states approve gay marriage. And an increasing number of churches endorse it.

This issue is one of the most polarizing in our country and even among Christians. So where should the true Christ-follower stand?

We should stand with homosexuals, of course. Because Jesus does love gay people too!

We should be living in community together.  We should be loving. I know that some people I love are gay.  I know that some of  them believe that it’s OK.  I also know that some of them believe God’s OK with it.

Well, is he?

Let’s find out.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 2 Tim.3:16

So what does the Scripture say about homosexuality?

Let’s read it. The Apostle Paul, also inspired by God, spoke directly about homosexuality in his letter to the church in Rome, a city with a substantial homosexual community.

…And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too. Romans 1

With that, to those I love, today I have to come out too.  I feel like I have to come out with what I believe is truth. I feel I have to warn you about the spiritual danger that is imminent. Indulging the flesh in a homosexual lifestyle is spiritual suicide.  It may be socially acceptable.  It may be legal. Our president may think that it is just.  Churches may give their thumbs up. But the Creator of earth and sky declared it wicked. And that terrifies me.

Now, to my straight friends, the way you have disregarded marriage started us down this path.  You appeal to Eden. You like to remind the world that God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. You protest  “One Man + One Woman= Marriage” but you engage in premarital sex, go through multiple partners and are OK with divorce after you finally do get married.  That’s far from the ONE man/ONE woman standard God ordained in Eden. To you, the Word of God also says:

Give honor to marriage… Heb. 13:4

For you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor. 1 Thes. 4:2-4

Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth. “For I hate divorce!” says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.” Mal. 2

God says:

  • Honor Marriage
  • Don’t divorce
  • Don’t have sex with just anybody
  • Don’t practice homosexuality

At this point I’m going to ask you to please spare me the name calling or accusations that I’m a bigoted homophobic hate monger.  Let’s move past those tactics.

I’m not asking you to like this message or agree with it necessarily. It’s not about agreeing with me. I have nothing to do with the origin of truth.  But the Most High God does. And his statutes are being disregarded like antiquated pieces of mythology.

In our era we feel like we have come so far past the dark ages when people actually believed that you had to practice heterosexual monogamy in a marriage for life.  How archaic right?

Wrong, we were created in the image of God, male and female, to represent and bear the image of the Eternal (Genesis 1 &2). That is not archaic. That. Is. Divine.

The one who is eternal and divine gets to make the rules.

Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin…or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality…—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything. You say, “Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food.” (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies. And God will raise us from the dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead…

Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united into one.” But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.

Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

In our wisdom this seems crazy. I get it. It seems crazy that if two people love each other why would we restrict their love? When the world is so full of hatred why make this an issue? But this is so much bigger than legalizing gay marriage. This issue is about realizing we don’t know better than God. It is about glorifying God in our bodies as He dwells in us, His temple. This is about an eternity in which that same God hold’s our fate.

But it seems so mean. Jesus loves everyone right? John 3:16!  Well, to be fair to Jesus, just a few sentences later he said:

Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment. John 3:36

God will judge us in anger because God hates sin. When we are covered in sin God hates us. Typing those words is difficult for me. I’m not comfortable with that concept at all. But if I am going to be fair to the gospel, that is also in the book.

For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness;
No evil dwells with You.
The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes;
You hate all who do iniquity.
You destroy those who speak falsehood;
The Lord abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit. Psalm 5:4-6

Here’s the thing, if we don’t get that God is as much judgement as he is love, we miss the beauty of the cross. He hates sin vehemently. And he loves us dangerously.

It’s not just about judgement. It is about love too. That love hurled Jesus out of heaven to ransom us. That love is not a flimsy, earthly, romantic, gay or straight love. That love is a cosmic, supernatural, sacrificial, sacred love.   Mankind must reciprocate that love to the Creator, the Messiah and the Holy Spirit in their love language- holiness.

Jesus declared his love for you and signed his name in blood. He sent the Spirit to be our guarantee that he is coming back for us. He is saying “Trust me. Come to me. If you give your life for me, I promise it will be worth it!”

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Psalm 34:8

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this!!!!! I have been wrestling with this all day yesterday and today, and your post has brought everything back into perspective for me. My first duty as a Christian is to love the Lord God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love my neighbor, gay/straight/bi/whatever, as myself. My second duty is to preach the Word, but to do so with love, 1Cor. 13.
Again, thank you and God bless you!

The Apostle Paul needs to come out of the closet and stop hating himself. What a miserable worldview.

All the writers of the Bible were inspired by God. Be angry with the apostle Paul all you want but you’re really just angry at God’s desire for holiness in His creation. You are not alone though…all humans battle with our selfish desires.

Sorry, but I’m not going to let the views of one person speaking for a faith commuity dictate to me what is the will of God.

You might want to go back to the top and read the second verse that Serena quoted. You’re blaming Paul but you’re really angry with God.

well said…not only homosexuals, but , all who do wicked…i think sometimes we forget our own sin when we see someone doing something we don’t do….to God sin is sin….one is no worse or less than the other….we must all strive….everyday….everyday….to listen…to hear…to practice to the best of our ability what our Lord has said….if we choose to follow Him…if we choose eternal life….

I have to wonder why man places more emphasis on homosexuality then any other sin. I have sit in church settings where people proudly admit that murder can be forgiven, that adultery is forgivable, etc. They even read scriptures about it and such. But let someone bring up the sin of homosexuality and people go crazy in an uproar. Before you jump me for this let me share….. My brother was struggling with homosexuality issues. He was brutally murdered in 2003 (to clarify not in anyway a hate crime against homosexuality) the church rallied around me until that little tidbit came out, then it was as if he deserved to be murdered (by a person he was trying to help by the way). I have to say as his sister I often struggle with and pray about his eternal destiny, it is not easy living with the fact he could be in hell. I often get upset that people treat this sin differently then any other sin. I wish I had known then what I know now in my christian walk, I would have treated things differently. I can’t speak for all who battle the sin of homosexuality but in the case of my brother he was raped as a child, I have a harder time forgiving that sin then his. I also struggle with the fact that his murder showed no remorse and actually stated he had fun killing my brother and would do it again given the chance (while he smiled at me in the courtroom). Yet those same well meaning Christians that shunned my brother’s homosexuality were the first to tell me I had to forgive his murder and pray for him! (not saying I didn’t have to forgive just find it funny how much more forgiving they were of someone who could take a sledgehammer and hit someone in the head 13 times then take a knife and stab him in the chest twice) As a christian I encourage you to remember sin is sin and we are not in authority to place any sin above another. Instead of treating homosexuality as separate sin from all other sin just treat it as sin. Pray for all who have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

      Jennifer,
Your story makes my heart ache. I have spoken with multiple people, some in very close relationships to me, who have struggled with homosexual temptations. I agree with you that we have to stop categorizing sin. Don’t give up hope on the church in this. I have talked to so many people about this issue and have had an overwhelming amount of people who feel exactly as we do – that if the people who struggle with this sin weren’t so ostracized, perhaps that would be able to overcome their temptation.

I am so so sorry for what you and your brother have gone through. Please know that there are so many Christians out there who recognize the pain that comes with homosexual desires. I’m sorry you encountered Christians who did not handle this the way they should have. All sin requires forgiveness. Praying for you.

we are all sinners…no sin is greater than another, people need to mind their own business, leave everything up to God. I really don’t care what anyone does with their penis or their vagina. Have a fabulous day.

What I’d really like us to consider is whether “gay people” and “straight people” are biblically accurate terms, even socially accurate terms.

Gay is a behavior, not an identity. Straight is a behavior, not an identity.

Does God love people who have practiced sexual sins, including homosexuality, pornography, fornication, pedophilia, bestiality, adultery, voyeurism, rape? Yes. He loves people like us so much that He sent His Son to die for us. His Son died so we might be set free from these sinful behaviors.

So, I think it might be good for us to stop talking in terms of people being gay or straight and talk in terms of people pursuing certain activities and being involved in certain behaviors.

I won’t quote my whole blog post here. But I try to unpack some of this in a recent post on my page: Same Love

Thank you Serena again for clarity and your willingness to boldly proclaim the truth. Edwin, I read your blog and it was enlightening. I had never thought of how those sins can define us, but really we are eternal souls not behaviors. We are blessed to know God and His son Jesus for this is eternal life. John 17: 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

Your blog(s) have been such an encouragement to me! Thank you for what you do and having God work in you for His glory. God continue to bless you in all things and may you never be discouraged in spreading the truth.

I Peter 1:24-25 “for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.”

As crazy and diversified as the world is today, so it was 2000 years ago, so it will be throughout the future. The interpretations and perceptions of the past was done by societies of people far less intelligent as we are today, that are used in your presentation. When I read the bible, as well as all religious and biblical writings and scriptures, I remember and appreciate when and who wrote them. I choose not to live in the past and I surely believe in God. Instead I live in the now as I look to the future. Scientifically we know it is spectrums of DNA, Chemistry, Genetics and our experiences that makes us who we are. It all boils down to where things fall on each of many spectrum that relates to us. Thus is the diversity of mankind. Homosapien and Homosexual alike. Yesteryear, they were not that smart. Today, many of us are capable of achieving this level of intellect. Gay people are just people, and what ever God has in store for any of us will equally include any and all gay people. Why? Because they absolutely are not a sin or sinner, simply because they exist. They exist because the natural universe God created equally includes them. This was not a mistake, it is by design. A sin would be, not appropriately appreciating all children of God and passing your own judgments upon them. Which you are clearly doing with your interpretations. Stop creating walls. Do you think for one minute a gay person wants to have anything to do with you? They are not abominations creating biblical suicide. And you are not a better person because you are not gay. They are normal everyday people living the life God gave them to live. Some are God fearing Christians. I have to firmly disagree with your blog and hope you learn the science behind all life on earth and then apply religious beliefs before you meet the creator of us all.

Thank you for your response. As a christian woman who recently married another christian woman… thank you. As hard as it is to believe the Holy Spirit has been alive in my heart and active in my marriage. I have found peace as I reconciled my faith and sexual orientation. I do not know of this spiritual death you write about in the blog. As a christian with a foot in both the church and the gay community I can tell you there os brokenness in both. And the most healing thing to bokenness is love.

There is room in this world for the Christians and the non-Christians and everyone in between. Believe what you want. I will defend your right to do so right up until you try to reshape my world into yours.

I think if Christians could give up the evangelizing and need to make the public sphere godly the world would be a better place. Feel happy that you are on the right path for you and stop being ‘terrified’ for the souls of other people (who have their own strong beliefs) . Surely your God would u understand and even if you think he won’t, you live in a world of people with just as many rights to pursue their interests . Stay with your faith and faithful friends but leave everyone else alone. We would find an easier time with each other.
