As we walked into the department store on a rainy Monday, my husband and I recalled the first time our hands touched. He shook my hand and said, “Hi, I’m Dan. Dan DeGarmo.” That was the beginning of our story.

This day we added part of the story we didn’t know fifteen years before. “Hi, I’m Dan. Dan DeGarmo. And one day our son will die.”

No event has shaped me more immediately than the death of my infant son. I am in the process of learning just who God is and how much he loves me. My story has been birthed through adversity- from sexual abuse and a broken family in my childhood, to rebellion to God in my teens, to a marriage that nearly ended because of our pride, and yes, burying my sixth child, Azaiah Stone.

But I stand today, recognizing that God is still on his throne and I will serve him.

Amitiah Solei born 10-28-14

Just three weeks after we buried our son, we conceived this beautiful girl. We named her, Amitiah, God is Faithful.

My husband and I, along with our six blessings we call our kids, live in Chillicothe, Ohio where we minister to a growing church and live in the hills.

I have a question: what exactly is a covering? Is it a “doily” that you referred to, is it a lace veil that covers part of the head? If either of these are considered “a covering”, would I be “properly covered” if I made a dress, skirt or blouse out of the same material? And does a covering worn during church services need to match your clothing? I refer to a conversation during a woman’s class, “I forgot my covering”, one woman said. “I have any extra one”, another woman said. “Oh, it’s purple, it won’t match my dress! Does anyone else have a color that would match my dress?”, said first woman. Are we wearing a covering for the right reaso?? These same woman condem me for not wearing a covering, won’t let me teach the children’s classes, won’t let me pray in the women’s class, and in general make me feel very unwelcome in the Lords church! They also “cover” their head with a napkin in a restaurant during pray for the food. Maybe I’m missing the boat, but I can see everything under their covering, so what is it covering? Thank you for your article and I hope you can help me resolve this issue I’m having.

Dear Glenice, I have the opposite situation to yours: I am the only woman at church who wears a head covering. (other than a few visitors on rare occasions, and a college girl who attends only part of the year). I am not treated any differently from anyone else, but my head covering is totally ignored. No one has ever asked me about it or commented on it. I wasn’t raised this way and no one in my family does it. I started wearing a head covering because I couldn’t understand the passage on it. Now that the passage has become clear to me, I find myself very puzzled by the attitudes of my brethren. I wore a piece of lace which I made myself when I first began to cover. As I studied the passage and thought more deeply, I changed to an opaque silk scarf which is large enough to cover my entire head and all my hair. I have never put a napkin on my head at a restaurant — I feel conspicuous enough wearing my scarf! I invite you to stop by my new web site www.HeadCoveringWoman.com which is still under construction, but which I hope to make a place for open discussion of this important topic.
